Orchid Classics is one of those labels that attempts to find the middle ground between forgotten and popular works and so far it is succeeding quite admirably. This disc groups together some of the finest chamber works to hail from the French mainland in what can only be termed as exquisite performances.
The Poulenc Sonata finds Koch on top form, negotiating the difficult challenges that this work poses with consummate ease. The same goes for the Stravinsky items which she also negotiates quite magically ably supported by Julian Milford's excellent piano playing. I particularly enjoyed the lovely Pastorale with its intimate solo parts.
Finally the disc closes off with a rip-roaring "Le boeuf sur le toit" by Darius Milhaud which also receives the virtuoso treatment. Excellent notes by Maya herself complement a truly enjoyable disc all round.
