Mahler's First Symphony has rarely been given such a sumptuous airing as this one. Jonathan Nott is fast making his name as one of the finest conductors around and after this recording, a new Mahler cycle is definitely expected (we already have the Fifth, and the Fourth is anticipated later on this year).
Nott treats the opening Langsam with almost unbearable mystery rising to the climax of Schleppend with alacrity in superb sound which is also an added plus for this CD. He is similarly expressive in the short second movement whilst he brings magnificent opulence to the Sturmisch Bewegt Finale which is one of those life-enhancing moments that very few can afford to be without.
As I've already indicated, this is an extremely desirable recording and is, at least to my mind, the best modern alternative for Mahler's First around at this point. Tudor's recording is absolutely first class and the copious notes accompanying the disc are also very informative. This is a winner on all counts.
