Quartetto dì Milano
Tudor Musique oblige 7083 77:26

In his chamber music, Krommer followed the style of <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/haydnfj.php">Franz Josph Haydn and <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/mozartwa.php">Wolfgang Mozart, and yet his modes of expression extend from the galant style of the earlier 18th century to Romanticism. These relatively early quartets, published in 1800, show Krommer at the height of his Classicism. In all, Krommer wrote more than 75 string quartets, of which these are numbers 22 through 24.

Some may read the dates of composition and bypass this CD, expecting difficult music. It's not. The concerto is in five movements, as is <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/bartok.php">Béla Bartók's, and there are echoes of that work in Higdon's first movement. The music has great power, is inescapably American and is, for me, an important release. Likewise City Scape, a commission by the Atlanta symphony, which portrays aspects of that city, especially effectively in the long second movement. The fine recording, also available as an SACD, shows the music in the very best light.

Symphony in B Flat Major, Z23
Symphony in C Major, Z21
Symphony in D Major "Diana", Z16

London Mozart Players/Matthias Bamert
Chandos CHAN9740 68:07

There is some confusion about the symphonies of the prolific Czech composer Václav (aka Wenzel) Pichl, in that some of his work may have been attributed to others, and the work of others attributed to him. A catalogue by Anita Zakin lists 39 symphonies, although other references credit him with many more. The symphonies on this CD are thought to have been written around 1769-70.

Pichl's career took him to Hungary, a twenty-year stint as Kapellmeister to Archduke Ferdinand in Lombardy, and finally to Vienna. With the exception of the last symphony which includes a minuet, all those recorded here are in three movements. This is another in Chandos's Contemporaries of Mozart series. <?php include($include_path . "affiliate_id_init.php"); $asin="B000L42J9A"; include($include_path . "amazon_link.php"); ?>Naxos 8.557761 contains four of his named symphonies, including the Diana Symphony.

The Bohemian composer Koželuch was <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/mozartwa.php">Wolfgang Mozart's successor as chamber music composer to the Austrian Emperor, and thus contributed to the flourishing of Viennese Classicism. As evidenced by these three lovely works, his 22 piano concertos are full of elegance and refinement, characteristics that helped make his music popular throughout Europe.

The Austrian composer Brüll began his career as a concert pianist until composition became his main purpose in life. His piano music shows the influence of various composers, notably <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/schumann.php">Robert Schumann and <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/chopin.php">Frédéric Chopin, but less so Brahms.
Schlagobers, or Whipped Cream, is a scintillating ballet, and one of Richard Strauss's rarely heard works. As you'd expect, it's lushly scored and performed with the usual Järvi touch. München, a five-minute waltz, started life as a tribute to Munich but in its revised form became a memorial for the bombed city.

Tchaikovsky's four suites for orchestra are, of course, far less known than his symphonies. The fourth, which is based on works of <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/mozartwa.php">Mozart, has had more outings than the others, and the last movement of the third, a theme and variations, has been occasionally released separately. There is much to enjoy in all of them, with the strongest element being the dance. These 1967 recordings by a conductor with a very strong track record in Tchaikovsky, eg his pioneering recordings of the ballets, sound as fresh as when they were first issued.

Württemberg Philharmonic Orchestra, Reutlingen/Christopher Fifield
Sterling CDS-1081-2 74:42

Sterling's series of releases of rare music by Romantic composers visits Switzerland this time. Hermann was a student of <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/humperdinck.php">Engelbert Humperdinck and a follower of <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/grieg.php">Edvard Grieg. His two symphonies are well-crafted and never fail to hold interest.

Both works are wide-eyed and optimistic, often seeming to depict middle Europe's great outdoors. Though not as grand in conception as <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/bruckner.php">Anton Bruckner's symphonies, Hermann's slow movements especially emply a similar pastoral palette.

This collection of short French pieces is useful in that few have been otherwise recorded. The Fauré concerto is incomplete but still worth hearing. Some may know the orchestral version of the Lalo fantasy. Nothing here to plumb emotional depths, just enjoyable music.

This well-chosen collection of short orchestral works by Holst gives further evidence, if any were needed, that he was not just a one-hit wonder. The music illustrates his folksong collecting, his fascination with oriental themes, and one of his few works for solo instrument and orchestra. The last two works are both rather dark and mysterious, in the manner of Saturn from The Planets. Lloyd-Jones has a fine track record as a conductor of English music and this very well-recorded CD adds to his reputation.

Born into a Belgian family of instrument makers and musicians, Fétis became perhaps the most important music historian and musicologist of the 19th century, as well as an influential critic. Though his writings were encyclopedic, his compositional output was relatively sparse.

His chamber music consists of three string quartets, three string quintets, the sextet included here (scored for the unusual combination of piano 4-hands, 2 violins, viola & cello) and a few other pieces, including these 4-hand piano sonatas from 1819. All of the works are finely crafted, and often quite beautiful. The performances are committed and first rate. Hard to find, but worth the trouble.

Latvian National Symphony Orchestra/Terje Mikkelsen
Sterling SACD CDS1084-2 78:14

As was usual during most of the nineteenth century, many Scandinavian and Finnish composers trained in Leipzig, and thus were influenced by such teachers as Carl Reinecke. The majority of the Norwegian Alnæs's output was vocal music, but also includes a piano concerto, which has been recorded by <?php include($include_path . "affiliate_id_init.php"); $asin="B000NJM4IO"; include($include_path . "amazon_link.php"); ?>Hyperion (CDA67555), and a set of orchestral variations.

These two symphonies show their German influences but there are also touches of <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/grieg.php">Edvard Grieg, and the final movement of the second is very Norwegian indeed. For those interested, the disc is a hybrid, multi-channel SACD.

These two immediately attractive works are listed as first recordings, and are in the tradition of German Romanticism. The first, especially in its scherzo, evokes <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/mendelssohn.php">Felix Mendelssohn. The third, like Gernsheim's symphonies, is strongly influenced by the music of his friend <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/brahms.php">Johannes Brahms. As this costs less than a cup of coffee and a sandwich, there's every reason to add it to your collection.

Saskia Lethiec, violin
Orquesta Do Norte, Porto/José Ferreira Lobo
Classic Talent DOM291112 64:19

One of the primary exponents of the French school of violin, Kreutzer was able to ride out the French Revolution and subsequent chaos with barely a glitch to his career. He was famous throughout Europe as one of the great virtuosos of his age. <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/spohr.php">Louis Spohr, no mean violinist himself considered him the most cultivated of the Parisian violinists, and <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/beethoven.php">Ludwig van Beethoven was so impressed with his playing that he dedicated his ninth violin sonata to him. Kreutzer considered Beethoven's sonata unplayable, however, and so never performed it.

The early concertos show the influence of his teacher, Anton Stamitz, and of the italian virtuoso Giovanni Battista Viotti who he met in 1782, but of the 20 concertos (all composed 1801-10) the later works show an individual voice emerging. Albrecht Breuninger has also released a set of three late concertos (#15, 18 & 19) with Alun Francis and the Southwest German Radio Orchestra on <?php include($include_path .
The second symphony was recorded many years ago by Igor Markevitch, but it's only quite recently that both symphonies have appeared in a handful of versions. Despite being written in the mid-nineteenth century, the orchestration is strongly reminiscent of <a href="http://<?php echo $site_host; ?>/music/comp.lst/beethoven.php">Beethoven. Emotional depths are not plumbed, but pleasure is all but guaranteed in the hands of Plasson, a specialist in French repertoire. More rarely recorded is Gounod's delightful Little Symphony for winds and written in his old age. It's well worth seeking out.
