Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

Angenehmes Wiederau  (Charming Wiederau)

Cantata BWV 30a, BC G 31

  • Homage to Johann Christian von Hennicke
  • Editions: BG 5.1, BG 34; NBA I/39

Angenehmes Wiederau was a laudatory cantata written for J.C. Hennicke, on his appointment as feudal lord of Wiederau. Alas, there seem to be no recordings of this work so I shall simply point out that most of the music is derived from BWV 30. BWV 30a/1, 3 and 5 correspond to BWV 30/1, 3, 5 respectively with BWV 30a/7 corresponding to BWV 30/8 and BWV 30a/9 to BWV 30/10. The aria BWV 30a/11 can be found hiding in BWV 210/8. The other movements are newly composed recitatives and for those you will have to refer to the editions listed above. It's also worth remarking that the first and fifth movements of this cantata made their way into an early (lost) version of BWV 195.
