Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

Wachet, betet, seid bereit (Watch, pray, be prepared)

Cantata 70a

  • Second Sunday in Advent
  • Epistle: Romans xv. 4-13 (Accept one another)
  • Gospel: Luke xxi. 25-36 (Heaven and Earth will pass away)

The music for cantata BWV 70a is lost but was later parodied in BWV 70. This means that the music can be recovered (see the BWV and Dürr) since BWV 70a/1 corresponds to BWV 70/1, BWV 70a/2 corresponds to BWV 70/3, BWV 70a/3 corresponds to BWV 70/5, BWV 70a/4 corresponds to BWV 70/8, BWV 70a/5 corresponds to BWV 70/10 and BWV 70a/6 corresponds to BWV 70/11. For more details, see the critical commentary to NBA I/1. I am not aware of any recording of this work in its reconstructed form.
