Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

Uns ist ein Kind geboren (Unto us a child is born)

Cantata 142

  • Christmas Day
  • Epistle: Titus ii. 11-14 (The grace of God appeared to me)
  • Gospel: Luke ii. 1-14 (The Nativity of Christ)

Cantata BWV 142 is now thought to be by Kuhnau (Bach's predecessor at Leipzig) but remains in Anhang II of the BWV because the attribution is insecure. A reference for this attribution is Schering, Bach-Jahrbuch, 1912, 132ff. I'm not aware of any currently available recording of this work.
