Polyansky continues his splendid Glazunov cycle for Chandos with an alert, eclectically profuse reading of the Third, one of the longer symphonise at just over 47 minutes. He benefits from the rustically charged woodwinds of the RSSO who play the music with a burning passion, especially in the mercurial Vivace and blazing Allegro moderato that concludes the work in typical bombastic fashion. Compared to previous excursions with Sverlanov, Butt and the more recent Anissimov on Naxos, I would now say that Polyanksy is leader of the poker, although each recording mentioned here is definitely worth its salt. Polyansky adds the attractive Concert waltzes for a not over generous coupling but his are polished, wonderfully mobile performances that recall the famous Ansermet recordings for Decca that remain a firm favourite with this listener. Add this to well informed, scholarly notes by David Nice and you have a definite winner on all counts. I eagerly await Polyanksy's concluding instalment of this excellent Glazunov cycle.
