This interesting issue released for the Haydn bi-centenary brings together a series of recordings which have been out of circulation for quite some time. However the Orchestre Les Solistes De paris is certainly attuned to the Haydn sound with a spanking interpretation of the Symphony #44 in a recording which is quite impressive after over 44 years. In fact it compares very well with previous stalwarts in the genre such as Doráti, Fischer or Hogwood (sadly no longer available on CD).

The double concerto is also intriguing, especially with such ravishing playing from Manzone and Petit, the latter bringing much imagination to the harpsichord part. With the Stabat Mater we go back to 1978 but you cannot really tell with such exemplary sound especially the balance between singers, chorus and orchestra. Fantapié's reading is broad and expansive allowing the somber nature of the music to develop and expand.

The two-disc set concludes with another interesting reading of the short "Libera Me Domine" which also moves along quite nicely. As I've already insinuated, recordings are clear and fresh notwithstanding their age whilst singing and playing is of the highest order. If you are looking for some good recordings of these works then you should really snap up this fine set.
