Robin Holloway remains one of the most lucid and enterprising composers of modern times and this enterprising première of his work on Bach's 'Goldberg Variations' is definitely a milestone in the history of two piano music. At first glance, this may seem to be a tribute to the greatness of Bach but on listening, one is struck by Holloway's outstanding inventiveness and thirst for the new.

In Jennifer Micallef and Glenn Inanga, Holloway has two of the finest pianists around, especially in the four hands business. I have been privileged to attend and review a number of their concerts and they have always struck me as sensationally in tune with each and every nuance of themselves, almost like two blending machines.

Although Holloway's work is complex and at times very daunting, Micallef and Inanga are completely at one with themselves and the quality of their playing is quite beyond reproach. Obviously, one cannot claim to be so familiar with such a piece, but the exciting virtuosity is something to be marvelled at.

Hyperion's recording is of the top drawer quality and any enthusiast of Bach will surely find this experience a wonderful one, with this young duo showing their utmost brilliance in all departments.
