Born 1962.
Ray holds a Doctorate in Microbiology and Immunology (1990, University of Rochester, NY) and now works as Associate Director of Residence Life and Judicial Affairs at Mary Washington College (Fredericksburg, VA). However, Ray's first love was classical music and recordings, and he remains active in this area. Much of his childhood was spent listening to his father's classical LPs, and it wasn't long until Ray started building his own collection, an activity which he still pursues with obsessional fervor. While in high school, Ray was active in choirs and musical theater, and it was a relief to everyone in his tiny upstate New York town when Ray went to McGill University in Montréal for four years of education in Microbiology and Immunology (having been talked out of a career in music by his practical parents).
Ray didn't give much thought to classical music as a part-time career until 1991, when he was asked by one of the editors of the University of Rochester's newspaper to contribute classical CD reviews to the paper's Eastman School of Music section. (None of ESM's students wanted to.)
Soon, Ray was posting reviews to Usenet groups and getting plenty of experience, and also feedback about what a music review should and shouldn't be. Lightning struck when harpsichordist Igor Kipnis saw a review Ray had written, liked it very much, and recommended Ray to Fanfare's editor Joel Flegler, who brought him on board as a contributor.
Today, Ray contributes reviews and articles to a variety of publications, and he also writes notes for classical CD releases. His writing credits include Esquire and the Miami New Times, and he is always looking for interesting new projects. He still is inflicting his singing on local choirs. Once a tenor, always a tenor!
