Bach Cantata Listener's Guide

Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe (Glory to God in the highest)

Cantata 197a

  • Christmas Day
  • Epistle: Titus ii. 11-14 (The grace of God appeared to me)
  • Gospel: Luke ii. 1-14 (The Nativity of Christ)
  • Rating: 1

Cantata BWV 197a is, apart from the text, lost to us. Some of the music can be reconstructed since some of this cantata was parodied in BWV 197. The music from movements 1-3 is lost but BWV 197a/4 corresponds to BWV 197/6 (considerably reworked) and BWV 197a/7 comes from BWV 398. Movements 5 and 6 were new compositions and are lost. The text can be found in Dürr and more details in NBA I/2
