Note: The information shown here is out-off-date and this page is being revised.

The Rachmaninoff Society is an international organisation founded in 1990 to encourage and bring into contact all those who appreciate the life and music of the Russian composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Vassilyevich RACHMANINOFF (1873-1943).

The aims of the Society are to further research and study of the life and works of Rachmaninoff and to promote greater awareness and appreciation of his music and art. The Society publishes a quarterly Newsletter which contains correspondence, varied articles, CD reviews, news of forthcoming concerts and recordings and members' news and for sale/wants advertisements as well as longer articles and essays of a more technical nature.

The Society is proud to have the eminent Russian-born pianist and conductor, Vladimir Ashkenazy as President. In addition we are privileged to count as honorary members Miss Sophia Satin and Natalie Wanamaker-Javier, both members of Rachmaninoff's family, renowned husband and wife pianists Howard Shelley and Hilary Macnamara and the distinguished conductor, Sir Edward Downes.

There are absolutely no formal membership requirements. All who are interested in Rachmaninoff, his art and music, are welcomed to join. Members need not take any active part in the affairs of the Society but letters and articles for publication by the Society are always welcomed and the Society will endeavour to answer members' queries or assist them in any research projects connected with Rachmaninoff.

The Society maintains close contact with Rachmaninoff's homeland and our Newsletters may be seen on display in his birthplace, Novgorod, as well as in Tambov and the nearby country estate of Ivanovka, where many of the composer's best-loved works were written and which is now a house-museum dedicated to his memory.

Our membership is truly international. Apart from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, members may be found in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

Whether you are a musician or not, whether you already know a great deal about the life and music of our chosen composer or whether you are a newcomer to classical music in general and the music of Rachmaninoff in particular, we believe you will find the Society has much to offer. The first publication of articles offering new insights into his life and work, an impartial review of many of the new CD releases, advance details of concert performances and recitals featuring his music and, perhaps above all, the opportunity to communicate with others who share the enjoyment and appreciation of a fine conductor, one of the greatest pianists of his era, a great composer and a wonderful human being whose music has given pleasure to so many audiences for so many years.
