Reading Malcolm Macdonald's notes, one sees that Hermann Goetz was one of the rising stars in late 19th century classical music but his early death robbed the world of further progress. These piano quintets are ample testament to the exceptional technical qualities of this composer and their issue is most definitely most welcome.

Musically, Goetz resembles a Brahmsian style but there is also that tinge of originality. The C minor work also includes a part for double bass and the symphonic plunge of the style is very strongly felt. Kenneth Sillitto leads the Pro Arte Piano Quartet with exemplary panache and style and the committed performances are certainly a joy to listen to.
