This is a fine package of Tchaikovsky works which includes popular and rarely heard works in equal measure. Although Marshev is a supremely accomplished pianist, he does appear to be rather cold in the big-boned First Piano Concerto not helped by the rather dull sound of the Aalborg Symphony Hall.

I rather enjoyed the 2nd concerto although I still treasure my Vox CD recording with Michael Ponti on top form recorded in stunning sound.

The other works are of debatable quality especially the Andante and Finale which is rather wayward at times. However Marshev and Hughes bring out the colour and character of both the Andante and the note spinning Concert fantasia with the short Allegro in C minor receiving its first modern recording here.

I would recommend other versions of the First including Gilels and Reiner (if you can find it) and of course Richter or Horowitz apart from Rubinstein. Otherwise the whole package is an interesting way to conclude your Tchaikovsky piano concerto collection.
