Sir John Barbirolli

Guild 2325

Conducts Russian Favourites

Hallé Orchestra/Sir John Barbirolli
Guild Historical GHCD2325 67m ADD Rec. 1950-9

This is the second CD dedicated to Sir John Barbirolli in what seems to be a fascinating series of historical recordings. Although some of the items have been briefly available before on EMI, the compilation brings back memories of great performances from the 1950's when Barbirolli was in his absolute prime.

The Capriccio espagñol fairly jumps about with energy throughout and you really would not guess its age in the fulsome Guild remastering. The same goes for the lovely Liadov miniature whilst the Tchaikovsky items are full of the romantic swagger which made this conductor famous. I particularly enjoyed the 'Romeo and Juliet' overture which is full of zest and life and makes a very viable interpretation. The 'Swan Lake' items also make for some relaxing listening.

All in all, another excellent disc from the Guild stable and after almost a decade of releasing discs on Dutton, The Barbirolli Society' seems to have found another winner in Guild.
