It is always good to have the opportunity to listen to some of the rare recordings of the great Fritz Busch and this disc is no exception. Bringing together recordings by two of the great masters, Mozart and Haydn, these post war recordings demonstrate a consummate conductor directing performances of the highest calibre in h interpretation and execution.

Haydn's Symphony #88 is one of his sunniest and light certainly shines through this splendid recording especially in the transition between slow and fast sections in the First Movement. The Sinfonia Concertante is also beautifully played although the recording is slightly on the dry side.

The Mozart items demonstrate Busch at his best especially in the Linz Symphony which is perfectly executed with just the right "feel' to the tempi. "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' is also beautifully played although again, the 1949 HMV recording is a bit recessed; the music shines through just the same. As usual with these Guild Historical items, notes are extremely detailed and a joy to read and playing times are as close to 80 minutes as possible. This is a winner on all counts.
