Scholl's voice is a marvel: secure in pitch, its sustaining power projects a feeling of ease that eludes many countertenors, who often sound merely like men who have mastered falsetto. If anything, Scholl has a slightly feminine cast, exemplified in his lofty vibrato. The recording beautifully captures accompanying lute, cello, and clavichord – I've been using it to audition speakers.
