Hyperion continues with their excellent Schumann song series that has now reached its sixth volume. This time, we also have a collection of song cycles and rarities from his wife, Clara, indeed very interesting morsels of beauty

Robert's 'Spanische Liebespiel' includes many esoteric Iberian influences but is intrinsically Romantic in style with all singers making quite an inspired contribution to proceedings on all counts. The pensive Funf Lieder Op. 40 is also very atmospheric especially in the Verratene Liebe part which is lovingly sung by Stephan Loges, an inspired baritone.

Clara Schumann's 'Sechs Lieder aus Jucunde' is another representative work of art whilst the interesting Spanische Liebeslieder contain music of the highest order, another testament to Clara's unique compositional skills.

Beautifully recorded and amply annotated, this superb set continues to add laurels to the essential Hyperion Schumann song series.
