This popular pairing features a pianist at the height of his powers together with a great conductor who has recently turned 80 so it is a souvenir of the golden period in the 1990's when classical music was top of everyone's agenda. Beethoven's Third sounds wonderful with Schiff taking the solo part by storm and creating some wonderful interplay between himself and the conductor.

The Fourth is also similarly ebullient but peaceful at the same time with the slow movement particularly captivating. So there you have it, a great coupling which surely is self recommendable.
