Franz Adolf Berwald (July 23, 1796 - April 3, 1868) was a Swedish Romantic composer of opera, chamber music, and symphonies. Though his compositions were well received in Germany and Austria, his works were not appreciated in his native Sweden during his lifetime, and so he made his vocation orthopedic surgery.
Though he was never able to devote himself entirely to compositions, his works display a great craftsmanship. He was innovative in the structuring of his symphonies, and he provided both inspiration to and influence on Swedish composers of later generations such as Ludvig Norman, Tor Aulin, and Wilhelm Stenhammar.
