It is difficult to guage completely what Renata Tebaldi gave to the world in terms of singing and her immense variety of repertoire. For many years, the main rival to Maria Callas, Tebaldi was occasionally preferred to the great Greek legend, not less due to her outstanding success rate in Decca's golden years as 'the' opera company.

This well filled five-CD collection attempts to enshrine some of that art in an extremely varied pot pourri which restores some classic gems to the catalogue. The first two CDs are chiefly dedicated to Verdi and the many famous recordings of 'Otello', 'Un Ballo in Maschera', 'Aida', 'Il Trovatore' and 'La Traviata' make well deserved appearances. However we then move on to other famous recordings such as Boito's 'Mefistofele' with Tullio Serafin, Catalani's 'La Wally' with Fausto Cleva and some French opera excerpts, all immaculately sung one must add.

Puccini was another Tebaldi stalwart and the fourth CD includes ample references to legendary recordings such as Serafin's 'Bohème' and 'Butterfly' together with extensive excerpts from 'La Fanciulla del West', 'Tosca' and 'Il Trittico'. The fifth disc is the more varied with Schubert, Puccini, Ponchielli, Lehar and Gamley also making an appearance.

As expected, the recordings are of the highest quality throughout with particular praise going to those engineered by the late 'Wilkie', Kenneth Wilkinson, a marvel of sound to this day. Although opera lovers will undoubtedly have most of this material in complete sets or previously issued recitals, this is a must for the Tebaldi fan as it also includes some rare photographs.
